Swim your way to a strong and steady you!

Swimming is a great total body exercise;, the buoyancy of the water allows you to do movements that you cannot safely do on the ground.  Zero gravity results in less stress on your joints and movement is easier not to mention painfree while in the water.  Swimming laps is a great heart healthy, total body workout!

I have one client who was overweight.  She came to me because the excess weight was severely limiting her lifestyle.  The stiffness in her joints resulted in excruciating hip and knee pain which affected her ability to walk, stand and sit. As her pain progressed,  we started therapeutic exercises in the pool to get her joints moving in their full, pain-free range of motion again.

A 73 year-old retired nurse, my client knew something had to be done if she wanted to remain independent.  Bound and determined to lose weight, gain strength, increase flexibility, improve balance and live her life again, she started Kaiser's medically-supervised diet plan and got serious about her fitness program.  Her goal? To do what she is most passionate about; ballroom dancing!!!

Twice a week for four weeks, she would march the length of the pool; do side kicks, back kicks, and front kicks; ankle stretches, walk up and down the pool stairs, do upper body exercises using a resistance band to push and pull the strength and flexibility required in daily life, and then get on a recumbent bike to loosen up her knees by moving them in full range of motion.

Once the weight started to come off, her movement patterns became more fluid; more coordinated and less painful.  Fully prepared for weight-bearing exercises, we started a customized, machine-based strengthening program to build muscle and burn fat.  We met for 50-minutes, twice a week for three months.   We followed the principle of overload and I progressed the difficulty level of the exercises as her strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and coordination continually improved.

My client and friend stayed focused on her goal and has lost nearly 30 pounds while increasing her strength, flexibility, mobility, and stability in epic proportions. (BIG BIG YAY FOR BARB!!!).   Has she 'bulked up'?  Heck no.  Ladies (and gentlemen), if you are over the age of 20, you do not have enough natural hormones in your body to "get big".  Lean muscle mass is hard to build; it takes consistent dedication, good form and good nutrition.

My message today is sometimes we need to swim before we can walk.  Swimming requires your joints to move in full ranges of motion and your body to fire muscles in a coordinated pattern.  It's best to combine land-based movements with water exercise. If all you do is water exercises, you are not addressing the gravity factor on earth.   Life happens in reaction to these gravitational forces.

If you haven't been moving, start a seated stretching routine like my Take 5 to Exercise DVDs.  These are great seated movements designed to prepare your body for life.

Frail elders in Sacramento fall prevention class show significant improvements

Even the oldest of the old can benefit from a fall prevention exercise program. In a class where the average age was 88 and most were living with multiple chronic conditions, everyone demonstrated improvement in fall-related fitness parameters after participating a 5-week balance and mobility training program.
Prior to beginning the class, the associate director of FallProof™ provided me with the FallProof™ for Frail elders program plans. Confident in the program, I progressively challenged the multisensory and musculoskeletal systems of these older adults. After 2 weeks, I noticed endurance levels improving as participants were able to complete the class with less fatigue (and less complaining!).
After 3 weeks, postures showed tremendous improvement as participants stood taller and quickly responded to verbal cuing. But mostly, participants shared "ah-ha" moments each week as they experienced benefits of training in their everyday lives.
I can talk about observations and realizations all day long but the truth is in the numbers. Numbers derived by pre- and post-class assessment testing. Each person in the class improved in at least one area of fitness related to fall risk. The greatest improvement was in a 91 year old lady who uses a scooter and a cane for mobility.

Listen to her numbers....
  • She increased her lower body flexibility by 6.5 inches
  • She increased her lower body strength by being able to get out of the chair 7 times using her hands compared to ZERO at pre-test
  • She improved dynamic balance by being able to get up and walk around a cone 4.8 seconds faster!
Amazing. This lady is so grateful for this class and I am so grateful she was in the class.

The stretching and strengthening exercises are all in my seated exercise DVD series, Take 5 to Exercise. The Basic 5 stretches are beneficial to everyone, regardless of age.

The moral of the blog is that it's never too late to benefit from consistent exercise program. People in the class wished they knew me 10 years ago....don't look back in 10 years and say, I wish I had listened....get active today! Order your set of fall prevention exercise DVDs and make the time to Take 5 to Exercise each day!

Fall prevention consultant for hire!

I have been busy doing fall prevention exercise workshops and demonstrations these past few weeks due to the professional networking I had done the months prior. It's amazing but each day, there seems to be another opportunity for me to do SOMETHING to increase awareness of fall risk factors.

Yesterday, I met with Kristin Jordan, founder of Serving Our Seniors, and had a wonderful discussion about the need for fall prevention education, particularly increasing the awareness of the link between exercise and reduced fall risk. I remember the first focus group during my internship at the Area 4 Agency on Aging and discovering that MOST people do not equate exercise with fall prevention! I was shocked!

The reason I'm shocked is because I have been studying fall prevention exercises since 2006. Basically, I live, breath and eat the four components of a fall prevention exercise program daily! I have been studying the "prevention-based" approach to wellness since 1991 so I realize that the choices I make today will impact my life in the future; whether that is tomorrow, 5 days, 5weeks, 5 months or 5 years from now.

It is probably safe to say that every research study that considers the effect of exercise versus no exercise prove the need for daily activity in order to remain functional. When considering exercise and fall prevention, persons who engage in activity are less likely to fall than those who do not exercise.
Please remember that it's never too late to benefit from a consistent exercise.
The choices you make today will impact your life tomorrow.

Therapeutic recreation and fall prevention exercise

Today I visited the Easter Seals Therapeutic Recreation services department to talk about seated fall risk reduction exercises.  Therapeutic recreation uses recreation and leisure to help people living with disabilities function independently and enjoy life.  No matter what physical challenges a person may be facing, bodily movement is necessary for a quality life.
Some individuals who are living with a disability have mobility issues which places them at an increased risk of falling.  I am not a physical therapist, I am not a doctor but I am a certified personal fitness trainer and I am an expert in the aging process and the bodily changes that are associated with aging.  Because older adults experience mobility challenges, I was confident that my Take 5 to Exercise Basic 5 stretches were appropriate for everyone in the room.
Every body benefits from flexibility movements.  Every body adapts to strength training.  Every body needs balance training and every body could use endurance training.  However, every body is different and some bodies have special needs.  The important thing is to respect your body's limitations and do what you can, challenging yourself without pain.  And mostly, do something you enjoy!   Take 5 to Exercise everyday!
