Exercise Etc Older Adult Workshop vs. Brain-Based Training

I have been a fan of Exercise Etc workshops for years.  Guy Andrews and his team do an amazing job educating trainers how to work with the older adult population.  I have learned valuable functional exercises for baby boomers and their parents.  They do a great job teaching simple exercises for the aging spine, hip, and shoulders.

If you don't know me, I've been studying the brain and how the brain works at the doctorate level for the past two years.  When you study the brain, your perspective of everything changes.  Things that present as problems in the body, begin in the brain.

I went to a local Exercise Etc workshop this weekend hoping to learn something new and to see how the standard senior fitness programming fits into the brain scheme of things.  

The instructor, Mike Diebler, is a great guy and extremely knowledgeable about movement.  He did acknowledge several things about the nervous system (aka, the brain) that I thought were interesting.  

  • We agreed about the importance of identifying the cause of the movement problem.  In Z-Health, we are taught to take an extensively thorough health history.   The cause of every movement problem lies somewhere in the nervous system.  In Z-Health, we have an 8-Levels model of assessment to systematically identify the source of the problem.
  • We agreed that no matter how much you try to 'workout' a problem or weakness on one-side, it will always exist.  In Z-Health, we are taught about the brain and that there are two sides.  After years of lifestyle habits, one side of the brain usually needs more activation.  In Z-Health, we systematically identify the dysfunctional side and activate it.  A person has to earn the right to train bilaterally
  • We agreed about the importance of deep inhales and long, strong exhales.  The diaphragm is your breathing muscle and like any other muscle in the body, it needs to be worked in it's full range of motion.  We humans are shallow breathers and do not fully exercise our diaphragm.  The reprecussions are bent forward postures.  We need to stretch the diaphragm.
I left after the morning sessions.  It was good to go there but I didn't learn anything new.  Please do not get me wrong; I by no means, think I know it all. I do not.  I mean that the fitness industry as a whole isn't teaching anything new.  


There are only so many ways you can move your body.  The only way to change the way you move is to activate the brain.  You can stretch and strengthen your "posture" muscles all day everyday but if your brainstem isn't getting the balance of extension and flexion activation, your posture will never improve.

If however, you activate the brainstem, your posture will improve immediately.   It's brain-based. It's science.  It's neurology. 

Thank you Exercise Etc for coaching me to be a great proprioceptive trainer.  Now I'm a  brain-based practitioner who activates vision, vestibular and proprioceptive systems for optimal performance and reduced pain.

Brains and Balance Training El Dorado Hills

El Dorado Hills is a beautiful, affluent suburb in the foothills of Sacramento and the older adults that live there are educated and know a good program when they see one.  This summer I offered several workshops to introduce brain-based balance training to this community and I just completed my first four-week Brains and Balance Training session at the Gilmore Senior Center.

Eight participants joined with high hopes of improving their balance.  After eight 90-minute sessions, each person left feeling more balanced, stronger and steadier on their feet.   One of the most consistent remarks I heard was how much steadier people feel while walking.

Pre- and Post-Senior Fitness Test scores showed huge improvements in four short weeks.  The most improved was a 71-year old woman with a chronic shoulder injury that affects her balance, stability and mobility.  She increased lower body strength by 7 chair stand ups, increased lower body flexibility by three and a half inches and was nearly two seconds faster getting up and walking eight feet.

The most improved male was a 76-year old gentleman who increased his lower body flexibility by FIVE and a half FULL INCHES and increased lower body strength by 5 chair stands in 30 seconds.   He worked hard doing his homework and applying the neuro-suggestions I give students for better performance.

Are you training the two types of movement needed to prevent falls?

There are two types of movement; reflexive and voluntary.  Reflexes are subconscious, instinctual reactions that occur quickly.  We learn these instincts as children and unfortunately, we may never train them again.  Remember that entire nervous system runs on the Use it or Lose it principle.

Voluntary movement is conscious, intentional movement.  This involves the frontal lobe and you decide how big a step to take, how wide, and in what direction.  We obviously train voluntary movements like squats everytime you stand up and sit down.  A conscious choice is to get up and move because if you know that if don't use those muscles, you know you will lose those muscles.

In my Brains and Balance Training classes, I train both reflexive and voluntary movement.  We go back to the basics and learn when you need to react and then teach you how to react.  I teach you how to train both your reflexes and your voluntary movement.

A Del Webb class participant reported that she used the reflexive training technique when walking through the parking lot and it saved her life.  We all know those cement parking stops.  Well she didn't see it because it was dark and she was looking somewhere else when she accidentally tripped over the parking stop.  Automatically, she started taking as many steps as necessary to regain her balance...just like we practice in class!

Hallejulah!  A fall prevented because of reflexive movement!  She didn't think about how to react, it just happened.  Train those instincts and your brain will automatically fire when needed.

First Brains and Balance Class of 2019 is the Best in My Career

I just completed my first four-week Brains and Balance Training session of 2019 and the post-testing scores showed the most improvement in the fifteen years I've been teaching fall prevention classes!



I am so proud of the eleven adults who came to the classes at the Fair Oaks United Methodist Church and put in the work to improve lower body strength, lower body flexibility and dynamic balance to reduce risk of falling.  In other words, they got stronger, more flexible, and better balance for quicker reaction speeds.

Brain-based training is a new approach to an old problem; loss of balance and falls.  This diverse group of older adults were willing to try sensory activation and muscle training and the results were amazing.  Their ages ranged from 59 to 82 and one used a walker for mobility while another walks four miles daily.  

After eight sessions in four weeks, four people improved lower body strength by 5.  In other words, four people were able to stand up and sit down five more times in 30 seconds.   That's an amazing improvement in such a short time that translates into reduced risk of falling. 

The most improved participant was a 66 year old frequent faller.  On the first day, she couldn't touch her toes; her hand was nearly 7 inches from her feet.  On the last day, this amazing woman reached 6 inches past her toes in the same test!  She gained over 11 and a half inches in lower body flexibility.  That is a new record for ANY STUDENT in my fifteen year career.  Congratulations! 

Two other students improved their lower body flexibility over three inches.  Lower body flexibility is necessary for a safe and stable walking gait and tight hamstrings are directly related to low back pain.  No more back pain!!!

The third senior fitness test measures dynamic balance and agility.  This is a life skill needed for safe movement through life so you can react timely to life's imbalances.   The youngest student of the group increased her timed Up and Go test by seven full seconds!  The oldest student of the class improved her time and walked stronger and more steady without using an assistive device.  

These  pre-and post Senior Fitness Test  numbers show objective, measurable data.  This data is invaluable to students who put in the work and do not realize how much they've improved.  What isn't measured is the improvements in posture, vision, reaction times and confidence.

Balance is difficult to measure.  These numbers don't lie.  How you feel is proof.  Get enrolled in a Brains and Balance Class or enroll your loved ones.  Invest in your future.

Simply neuroscience. Simply Fall Prevention.

Balance is complex.  Learning how to train it doesn't have to be.  As a Z-Health Neuro-Performance Coach, I am constantly trying to explain complex neuroscience and neuro-anatomy concepts in easy to understand phrases and analogies.

The science of neuroplasticity (any structural change in the brain to enhance performance so you will survive) is the science behind Z-Health.  I study the brain, both structure and function, and I am amazed at the results people (including myself) get when they activate underactive parts of the brain.

A guy in class asked me, why are we doing all this vision training?  I paused and explained the brainstem, cranial nerves, eye muscles and functional neuroanatomy in an easy to understand yet logical explanation.

A mentor of mine said study, study, study.  Write down potential questions and come up with a scientific explanation and an easy one.

My message today:  improving balance and preventing falls is not standing on one leg or following some outdated Balance Manual.  It's about training the muscles and senses involved in balance, particularly the brain's GPS system.

Keep it simple.  Train smart.

No One's Going To Do It For You!

My dad was tough.  Marines tough.  Brigadier General tough.  I remember playing him in tennis and he kicked my butt.  As I was rising to the top of my basketball game, he beat me.  No mercy.  It made me cry!  I don't know why but the fact that he played hard and beat me seemed unfair.  At the time.

I cried.  I was hurt.  After all, I was his daughter.  I was only visiting him since my parent's divorce and I was a good athlete.  Dad's are supposed to let their girl win.  Or at least that's what I must have thought.  But I'm here to tell you, he didn't give me any special treatment and it taught me that life isn't fair and you have to do the work if you want to benefit.   It made me a better player.  A full scholarship athlete. Thank you Dad.

You can't expect anyone to do the work for you.  In this day and age, you have to be your own advocate.  If you want better balance, you have got to put in work.  It's up to you to seek education classes and workshops that explain aging, balance and coordination as you age.  

If you have fallen down and you don't want to fall again, it's up to you find a balance class that gets you results.  IN order to get results you have to face the frustrations, make the mistakes and re-learn how to move correctly.                    
                 
As you teach your brain to move again, you will have the 'why won't you do what I'm telling you' conversation with your body parts.  Your brain can forget how to move a body part if you don't move it regularly.  Practice makes perfect and perfect practice gets results.  

You can rewire your brain for better movement, better balance and less pain.  The science of neuroplasticity proves it.  I have invested to become a brain-based movement re-educator that focuses on brain activation for better movement, balance and vision.    It works.....if you work it.

Feel Confident Walking Your Dog

I recently finished my first ever 4-week Brains and Balance Training in the beautiful gated-community of Whitney Oaks Springfield in the hills of Rocklin.   This independent living community is paradise.  Residents are active and many walk their dogs up and down steep hills and enjoy gorgeous views.

A small group between the ages of 76 and 86 invested their time and a minimal fee to participate in the 90-minute brain-based classes that met twice a week for four-weeks.  I applaud these individuals for their interest in brain-based training for optimized movement in daily activity.  Thanks for believing in the message I am sending:  your brain can change and you can learn how to move better, balance better, and see better.

One of the most improved in the class was a 76-year old lady who not only excelled in the three Senior Fitness Tests but also gained balance confidence that has impacted her life in wonderful ways.

Physically, she stood up and sat down 3 more times in 30 seconds, putting her in the 95th percentile for ladies her age.  Emotionally, she feels more secure and has increased confidence walking her dogs up and down the paths in her beautiful community.

She continues to be fascinated by the brain-based training and sensory activation techniques that caused her to balance, move and see better in four short weeks.

68 yo Felt Unsteady and Knew She Would Fall if She Didn't Do Something

In a recent four-week Brains and Balance Training session at the Fair Oaks United Methodist church, the youngest person in the class was 68 years old.  Sally came to class because she knew her legs were weak, she tripped over her own toes all the time and she felt unsteady on her feet.

This tall burst of energy was scared of falling and knew that if she didn't do something now to fix the problem that she would end up falling and who knows how that would turn out.  

That's when her friend told her about my Brains and Balance Training classes.  After attending my introductory seminar, she immediately signed up for the 4-week training session.

Sally was fascinated with the brain-based drills and she saw huge improvements during class.  Her eyes would open wide and she would laugh as she reached further toward her toes than she had ever had in her lifetime.

She missed two classes but that didn't matter; this lady did her homework drills as recommended and her results were amazing!  In three short weeks, she:

  • Strengthened her legs 
  • Increased he lower body flexibility

These improvements are huge in the fall prevention world because your legs are your 'fall prevention' muscles and they need to be strong to react and supple enough to be precise.  How you move is important and can greatly affect fall risk.

This nearly 70-year old student learned how to get up and in doing so she no longer needs her hands to get up from the chair!  Woo-hoo!!!!  This is a personal success for many women because no one likes needing help to stand up.  Trying and failing to stand up over and over again gets old and the unpredictability of lower body weakness takes a toll on your confidence.

So after three weeks of brain-based balance training, this lady was able to stand up and sit down without using her hands and on top of that,  she could do three more chair stands!  

Not only did her legs get stronger but she also increased her lower body flexibility.  On the first day, she was one inch away from touching her toes.  Three weeks later, she reached one and one-half inches past her toes!  Woo-hoo!

Greater lower body flexibility means less likely to drag your toes when you walk, causing unnecessary trips and slips.  This was one of her main concerns on the first day of class.

Brains and Balance training rule #1: Never move into pain

Your brain is plastic.  Your brain can change.  The way you move can change.  The amount of pain you live with every day can change.  Your balance can change.  The way you think can change.  The possibilities are endless however in order to reap the benefits of functional neuro-antomy, aka "brain training", there are a few rules you must follow.

The number one rule when training for change at the brain level; never move into pain.  Pain is an output and is the brain's way of saying stop.  In order to teach your brain how to move better, you have to break bad movement habits. 

This means you have to move in ways you haven't moved.  In some cases, it might be the first time you've ever moved correctly and that may feel different.

Different is good; pain is bad.  When I train private clients and teach classes, I guide people through new movements.  The brain loves novelty; it pays attention.   It's fun to watch people move a part of the body for the first time; facial expressions, tense muscles, and absolute concentration fill the room.  This is good!  You can teach an old brain new tricks.

Learning how to move each joint of the body is essential for optimal movement. The better a joint can move in isolation, the better your TOTAL BODY MOVEMENT.  If you want to walk better, you want to be able to control all the joints and body parts in isolation so when called upon to work together, there aren't any surprises to the brain.

Because some body parts haven't moved in full range of motion in years, it can be awkward but it should never be painful!  All exercises can be modified to reduce pain.  The way to reduce pain and still be able to move is to:
  1. Slow down the movement
  2. Make the movement smaller
Joints, muscles and nerves were made to move!  We already know that if you don't use it, you lose it.  Start slow and get bigger.  Stay out of pain as you learn to control how your body moves, both in isolation and integrated movement.

Requirements for Brain Change to Occur

The science of neuroplasticity proves the ability of the brain to change; to develop new neural pathways that increase efficiency and optimize performance of brain and body.  Activating areas of decreased brain function can decrease pain, improve vision, improve memory and cure chronic movement problems.  Knowing that the brain has the capability to change is exciting; it means that we can gain control of our body and mind.

While change is possible, there are certain conditions that must be met in order for any neural change to become permanent.  What is necessary for brain change to occur?  What is the ideal environment for neural changes to happen?

First, a trained applied functional neuroanatomy professional must test brain function and identify areas of weakness.  Once identified, your qualified trainer will implement specific drills and record how your brain reacts to specific activations.

In order for the changes brought about through specific activation and/or inhibition, the following conditions must be met:

1.  Pay attention to what you're doing; be present.  This is the most important thing for you as a client; when training the brain you must pay attention to the drill you're doing.  We all have times when lifting weights or exercising in general that we drift off into random thoughts.  Once we've learned "how" to do an exercise,  we often slip into "autopilot" mode and go through the motions without mentally thinking about what we're doing.  
This lack of focus will not cause neuroplasticity to happen.  When trying to form new thinking and movement patterns, you need to concentrate and be present in the moment.  This is not 'autopilot' mode; once that occurs, bad habits sneak back in and no significant change occurs.

2. Short Frequent Sessions:  Length of practice time matters.  Intensity of practice matters.  Frequency of practice sessions matter.  The general rule of thumb to practice is 5 minutes four times a day, seven days a week.  So if you want to improve your vision, you will practice specific vision drills for 5 minutes four times throughout the day.  

3.  Practice. Just do it.  You know what you need to do.  You know how to do it.  But you don't do it.  Why?  Just start with one thing.  Just move the eyes.  If you're depressed, do the recommended eye drills proven to activate pain inhibitors and stimulate positive, feel good chemical changes in the bloodstream.  Once you start moving, the juices begin to flow.  This is not strenuous but subtle.  

4.  Believe that change is possible.  Fundamentally, you gotta believe that you have the power to control your mind and change the patterns that aren't working.   To make the changes permanent, believe you can do this; you change the way you think, the way you balance, the way you see and the way you feel.

Cerebellum: Home of Accuracy, Balance and Coordination

How’s YOUR Balance or Neurologically Speaking, How's Your Cerebellum?

The other day in my Brains and Balance class, I talked briefly about the cerebellum because the cerebellum is a vital part of the nervous system necessary for accuracy, balance and coordination; things we all need to get through this life gracefully or at least remain on our feet!

The cerebellum, also referred to as the “little brain”, is the brain’s integration center.  The cerebellum is involved in all movement; it responds to the cortical signal for movement, relays that message to the appropriate body parts and then gets feedback from the skin, joint and muscle receptors about the accuracy and coordination of the ongoing movement.

If the movement is poor, the cerebellum corrects the inaccuracies in order to produce coordinated, balanced movement.  

Movement is a dance between the sensory and motor systems and the cerebellum is a key player in the activation and inhibition of muscles.  Good balance, accuracy and coordination requires a healthy, well-functioning cerebellum.

In order for the cerebellum to be healthy, it must get consistent, timely input from our eyes, inner ear, skin/joint/muscle receptors as well as other parts of the brain.  Simply said, the better the input, the better the output.

Minimal to weak input signals result in no movement or ratchety and uncoordinated movements.    Poor input equals poor movement.  If the sensory inputs the brain don’t get activated on a regular basis, the input signals become weak and defective.  Your brain doesn’t trust weak and dysfunctional signals.  In other words, use it or lose it. 

Think about walking in the dark with little to no visual input; movement is slow, uncertain because the vision inputs are unreliable.  A cerebellum that isn’t activated regularly becomes dysfunctional and the consequences are evident; either in your balance, stability, coordination or all of the above.

In class we did some quick cerebellum tests.  First we did rapid toe taps.  Was the left as quick and timely as the right?  Then we did rapid hand rotations on the opposite palm.  Fingers and thumb straight and clasped together, we hit the back of the hand then flipped over to hit the palm of the hand against the open, flat palm of the other as fast as possible for 5-10 seconds.

Some inaccuracies in coordination and rhythm were immediate while others showed up after about 3-5 seconds.  For a few, this didn’t seem to be too difficult, at least for one hand!  That is completely "normal" finding however I suggest that you get your cerebellum activated! 


How do you train your cerebellum?  There are lots of ways but to keep things simple, to improve cerebellar function, train the inputs and practice circles and figure 8s. Accuracy, balance and coordination.  Activate your little brain to improve balance, accuracy and coordination.
