Why You Need Brain Training as You Age

The thing about getting older is we tend to do the same things over and over again.  We rarely do different actions, especially with our sensory systems.

The neat thing about the nervous system is the entire thing runs on the "use it or lose it" principle.  If you don't do certain actions, after years of disuse, nerves that innervate those muscles die.

The big deal about this is that those nerves run to the brain.  Not doing specific drills means areas of the brain aren't getting activated.  The brain is also a "use it or lose it" organ so after years of little-to-no use, areas of the brain begin to die, too.

That's why you need to do brain-training;
use your brain or lose your brain and the everyday skills it does!!!!

KEY POINT:  When doing brain-based training, prepare to do some different things; things that may seem silly but you do drills that activate specific muscles, which activate specific nerves which stimulate specific areas of the brain.

Here are three reasons why your
DOCTOR OR PHYSICAL THERAPIST isn't prescribing  these drills:

1.  Brain training is NEUROLOGY and not every doctor or physical therapist specializes in neurology or is current on neuroscience research.
2.  Brain training that I specialize in is based on applied neuro-anatomy and neuro-physiology.  These techniques are TEN YEARS ahead of general practitioner knowledge and they require STUDY.  Ask your doctor, physical therapist or nutritionist if they've read a neurology-based research article recently.
3.  Brain training drills work.  No prescription.  No fancy machine.  No magic pill.  These are holistic, brain-based drills that activate nerves to stimulate areas of the brain.    Unfortunately, in our society, doctors and physical therapists get paid by drug companies.  After all, a patient cured is a patient lost.

OUR AMAZING BRAIN
During brain-based balance training, your brain has to receive the input, interprete the input and decide what to do and create an appropriate output.  This process has to happen faster than one-quarter of a second or you will fall. .

If you haven't done these drills in awhile (or ever), brain training can be fatiguing. Your brain uses up to 70% of daily calories to function, more when it's being used.  This is why it's so important for people to fuel their brain.

Fuel for the brain does not align with societal messages.  Your brain needs glucose and oxygen.  Glucose is sugar.  Sugar is not bad for you; your brain needs it.

Unfortunately, fake news has people avoiding sugar like the plague.  If you avoid sugar, your brain will get the needed glucose from your body's tissues; breaking down muscle for energy to support basic metabolic functions.

Final message:
Wake up and smell the roses!  Your brain needs activation more than your muscles.  Why?  Your brain tells the muscles and nerves what to do.  Brain training is not only doing crossword puzzles and brain twisters; it's activating different cranial nerves and sensory systems.

Be ready to put in the work.  To do the drills.  To be responsible for your own health.

I'm on your side.  I want you to age to the best of your ability.  I want you to succeed.  I've invested in a neuroscience-based education to help you remain independent and free of falls.  If you want to learn more, contact me.

Finally, give your brain the protein it needs for healthy function!  Collagen protein is the most abundant protein in the body.  Great Lakes is clean, grass-fed source.  Zero taste, easy dissolved.  Get $5 off Great Lakes Collagen protein:  Click here

Respiration Training Drill: How to Belly Breathe

The diaphragm is your 'breathing' muscle.  It's a large, dome-shaped muscle that attaches to all the hot spots of the "core".

Just like any other muscle in the body, the diaphragm needs to be stretched.  It needs to be exercised.  Learning how to breathe to work the diaphragm is a challenge.  I"m not going to lie, it's the exact opposite of how you've been doing it.

Breathe in, expand your belly.  Exhale, tighten the belly.  Breathe into Buddha belly.  Exhale into slim, tight contraction.

Being able to control your breathing pattern is life saving.  Breathing competence is essential so you're not constantly gasping for breath or mouth breathing.

Unfortunately we are shallow breathers.  We are mouth breathers.  As a result, we over-oxygenate our brain and body.  That can't be possible you think, oxygen is good so more is better. WRONG.

Your brain needs oxygen for fuel but it also needs glucose.  We all know that too much glucose is bad; your cells are not able to respond to excessive amounts of sugar and therefore the sugar can not get into the cell.

It's the same with oxygen; too much in the blood reduces the cells ability to take oxygen into the cell for use.  100% blood oxygen is NOT GOOD because there is a natural blood gas balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The brainstem, specifically the medulla, is the respiration center because it is responsible for blood gas balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide.  Too much oxygen and we don't breathe correctly.

I offer respiration training in private sessions.  If you have asthma, COPD, or don't feel like you ever get enough oxygen, book a session with me.

Follow along with me in this simple belly breathing exercise:

Brain Re-training for Ringing in the Ears

We all have had some type of injury or trauma to our body and soul.  A fall, a fracture, a scratch, a sprain, a concussion, a stomach virus, a verbal assault, a car accident; the list goes on.   You may forget the details but your brain doesn't.

Your brain remembers EVERYTHING.  Such as where you were looking when you fell, the details of the encounter, the fragrance of the dental assistant's hands, music in the background.  These details matter when healing.

Injured areas may be too weak to send signals to the brain that are strong enough to make change.  As a result, you  need to stack several drills together so neurons pool together in order to send super strong signals to the brain to thereby create positive change.

I am working with a lady who has lazy eye.  She also has Eustatian tube (inner ear) problems on the same side.  This is because the nerves that innervate the eye muscles and the ear tube are damaged.   As the nerves begin to die, they switch into hypersensitive mode.

In other words, a dying nerve craves attention; it doesn't want to die so it becomes hypersensitive to anything and everything.  The result?  Ringing in her ear.  Tinnitus, or ringing in the ear is a nerve problem.  For anyone who knows cranial nerves, tinnitus indicates cranial nerve #7 problem however cranial nerve 5 and 8 are also involved in tinnitus.

In her treatment plan, the focus is to activate these dying nerves.  The results have been good but they're not lasting.  The results aren't lasting because the the injured/damaged nerve is too weak to send strong enough signals to elicit long-lasting change.

This calls for "super stack" powers activated!  In other words, we put all of her high payoff drills together at once.

The result?  The ringing in her ear got lighter in sound and lower in pitch.   YAAAAAY!

The message?  The injured nerve is too weak to send messages to change the brain by itself; she has to send stronger signals to the brain from the right side of her head.  In order to do so, she has to stack several of surrounding nerve drills at once to create a signal that is strong enough to the brain and activate change.

Drills need to be done frequently and with high repetition.  This is not easy, but tinnitus can be fixed.  She was thrilled the ringing was lowered and lighter but she was discouraged at the amount of work she needs to do to fix it.

It's up to you.  If you're willing to do the work, you can fix your tinnitus.  There is no magic pill and if someone says there is, they're lying.  Neuroplasticity requires work; activate, don't medicate.

Brainstem training normalizes blood pressure

Everything begins in the brain and everything in your body is controlled by your brain.  Your brain is responsible for your blood pressure, your breathing rate, your anxiety, your fears, your balance, your posture, your strength, your vision.  EVERYTHING BEGINS IN THE BRAIN.

A lot of people don't understand that blood pressure is controlled by the brainstem.  If you don't activate your brain, your blood pressure can skyrocket or plummet, depending on the health of your brainstem.  Conversely, if you consistently train your brainstem, blood pressure can normalize.

The biggest mistake most people make is not measuring BOTH sides for blood pressure.  This is a huge problem when one side of the brain is less healthy than the other.  The difference between the sides is due to years of inactivity or overactivity on one side only.  This has nothing to do with right or left-handedness.

My oldest client is 93 years old.  When I first started with Cesar, his right side blood pressure was considerably higher than the left.  This is because his right cortex is underactive and needs more activation.

His training for the past 18 months has consisted of brainstem activation, cerebellum training and cortical training.  As a result, over the past month, his blood pressure readings are within 5 on the right and the left.

Not only are his blood pressure numbers fantastic (126/78 average) but they are the same.   One side of his brain and therefore his heart are not working harder than the other.  He is in fantastic health and his cognitive ability is improving everyday.  At 93 years old, this man can now throw the ball better left handed than his dominant right hand.

If you're on blood pressure medication, check both sides.  If one side is considerably lower, you may not need blood pressure medication, you might need brainstem activation.

If you want to know how to activate your brain for immediate results SPECIFIC to your needs, contact me.  No brain activation program fits all.  You need your own program.

Folsom Seniors Show Remarkable Improvements in Strength and Flexibility

Does your low back hurt?  Do you often trip over your own toes?  Do you sit a lot during the day?
ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT FALLING?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you want to enroll in my brain-based balance and mobility fall prevention training classes.

I just finished a 4-week session of "Brains and Balance Fall Prevention Training with Coach Kelly" through the City of Folsom's Parks and Recreation Department.   I had a full class with 14 people, 2 withdrew, leaving the perfect small group training size of 12 mature adults.

This group was a combination of old and young, athletic and sedentary, but all had the goal of improving their balance through functional neurology brain activation drills and physical therapy-based balance and mobility training techniques.

Senior Fitness Test results were outstanding; six out of the eight people tested on the last day improved their lower body flexibility score three (3) or more inches!  This is remarkable improvement for everyday life.

Improved lower body flexibility translates to safer walking gait, less back pain, improved posture and better balance because you can react quicker to life's imbalances if you're not in pain and your legs are more agile.

In addition to improved lower body flexibility, this group of women improved lower body strength by an average of 3.5 chair stands.  The chair stand is a universal test to measure lower body strength among older adults.     Three more stand ups in 30 seconds translates to quicker reaction to imbalance and can save your life.

Lower body weakness is the #1 cause of falls among older adults.  This group of ladies significantly reduced their risk of a fall in only four-weeks.  They worked hard, did their homework and the test results prove the results.

Unfortunately, four people were not in attendance for the final testing.  I am certain these numbers would have been even better if they were tested.

If you want to get stronger legs, reduce back pain and learn how to active the senses involved in balance, enroll in one of my brain-based balance and mobility training classes.

Summer's Sizzling Improvements in Woodland Brains and Balance Class

2019 has busy summer for the Fall Prevention Lady!  I've been presenting neuro-balance workshops and teaching brain-based fall prevention classes in local Sacramento communities.   I just completed a four-week Brains and Balance Training session at the Woodland Community Center and senior fitness test improvements were sizzling fantastic!

As you know, I use the only standardized fitness tests for seniors; Rikli and Jones' Senior Fitness Tests, to assess fitness components associated with falls.  Thanks to testing over one hundred seniors for my research study, I ALWAYS measure pre- and post-scores to test the efficacy of the class.  Tests provide OBJECTIVE DATA; numbers don't lie.   Students not only feel better, they SEE the numbers.

Each participant is tested in lower body flexibility, lower body strength, and dynamic balance and agility skills on the first and last day of class.  In my summer Woodland class, there was a tie for most improved.   The tie was between two women; 74 and 73 years old.

Look at these life-changing numbers:
                                                                   73                                              74

Lower body Strength:                 10/16     +6  stand ups               11/15             +4 stand ups
Lower body Flexibility:              0/+5       +5 inches                     -4.25/+1        +5.25 inches
Dynamic Balance & Agility:      8.4/7.3   +1.1 sec faster               6.6/5.4         +1.2 sec faster

AWESOME STUFF!!!!

Translated into normal language, both ladies significantly increased lower body strength.  They built leg muscles standing up and sitting down.  Legs are your fall prevention muscles so this is a big deal.

Both ladies increased lower body flexibility by over five (5) inches!!!  One, can reach her toes for the first time in 30 years and the other can reach five inches past her toes.  This improves their walking gait and eliminates low back pain.

Finally, both ladies can get up and walk quickly and safely around a cone that is eight feet away.  Stronger legs and flexibility in the hamstrings result in quicker movement.  This life saving skill can get a person quickly across the street when the light starts flashing.  Quicker reaction skills and ability to navigate around an object can prevent a fall.  LIFE SAVING.

The senior of the class, my dear 85 year old Audrey, increased in all three components.  She continues to increase her lower body strength, gain flexibility and quicken her reaction speed with each repeat performance.  This session she did increased lower body strength by a sizzling four (4) more stand ups and sit downs.  In FOUR WEEKS!!!

Folsom Senior Center offers Brains and Balance Training Sampler

I started teaching workshops at the Folsom Senior Center this summer.  I instantly liked vibe of the center and the awesome staff led by director Recreation Coordinator Ryan Erwin when I visited and the residents make the center even more welcoming.  They are independent older adults enjoying socialization, exercise, art, music and meals and now, my brain-based balance and mobility training classes and workshops.

Folsom Seniors GET IT!;
the importance of training the brain
for better performance!
Over twenty Folsom seniors attended my "ABCs of Balance" workshop and  several brave students practiced lifesaving skills in my "3-Step Get-UP from the floor" workshop.  Fifteen seniors signed up for three (3) sessions of brain-based balance and mobility training.

The three-session training taught students how to activate the sensory systems of balance.  Our brain determines every movement and training the sensory inputs to the brain directly improves cognitive ability and physical performance.

Applied neuro-anatomy and neuro-physiology instantly changes the way you move through life, your balance and stability, your vision and your pain level.   As a certified Z-health Neuro-Practitioner, this is the brain-based training I am certified to teach.

Students moved their feet and walked barefoot.  They moved their eyes and stared at nine locations.  They moved their heads and bounced on their toes.   Their balance and posture improved instantly.  Strength and flexibility increased significantly.  Movement got better.

Three sessions.  Life looks and feels better.  Movement is more efficient.
Schedule your introductory workshop and 3-session training package today.

September session!

Arthritis and Balance Training

Whenever I ask my group classes, "Who has arthritis?" the common response is laughter and the retort, "Who doesn't?".  Yes it's true as we age, our joints undergo more wear and tear and the likelihood of developing osteo-arthritis increases.  Osteoarthritis results from 'overuse' of joints throughout life and as a result, joints become stiff and movement can be painful.

More and more scientific research articles are showing the direct link between diet, inflammation and arthritis.  Study after study shows that if a person eats the so-called 'heart-healthy' fats, polyunstaturated fatty acids to be exact, inflammation increases and cases of arthritis and diabetes increases.

To reduce likelihood of arthritis or manage symptoms, a person needs to eliminate PUFAs (cheap vegetable oils like canola, safflower and corn oil) from the diet and eat more saturated fats such as coconut oil.    I'm not a nutritionist but I am brain practitioner.  I study what's needed for a healthy metabolism and optimal energy production.

Because this blog is about arthritis, I wanted to first address what you're putting in your mouth.  Don't eat nuts, nut butters and nut oils.  Stay away from polyunsaturated fatty acids, PUFA, as they increase inflammation and pain.  Here's a link to one scientific article explaining the ramifications of eating polyunsaturated fatty acids:  LINK TO PUFA DANGERS

In addition to eating healthy,  it's important that a person with arthritis start moving those joints.   The Arthritis Foundation states the best line of action is to strengthen the muscles that surround and support each joint for less painful movement.

As a Z-Health Brain Practitioner, I believe that movement is the remedy for most all complaints.  If you move better, you feel better.  When talking about joints (where bones meet), movement produces synovial fluid.  Synovial fluid is the "feel good juice" produced when joint move because it actually changes the biochemistry of the blood.

Without movement, cartilage and bones suck up all the synovial fluid.  The result is excruciating pain with movement.  For reduced pain, keep the joints moving to produce those feel good juices.

I'm not saying joint mobility will cure arthritis but moving those joints can increase synovial fluid and make movement less painful.  Consistent movement reduces pain but you have to move the joints enough to reap the benefits.

Please keep your joints moving.  Think circles, in both directions. Avoid PUFA at all costs and don't give up.  Movement is life and it's time to start living.

Learn and Do

I just attended Perform Better's one-day "Learn by Doing" workshop in South San Francisco.  This is an annual event for me and this year's presenters were interesting.  I really appreciated the opportunity to learn from one of the fitness industry's best, Mike Boyle; a renowned Strengthening and Conditioning Coach.

As a lifelong learner and a movement specialist who is constantly striving to learn more about the human body and movement patterns, I keep an open mind when listening to fitness professionals.   However now that I am a Z-Health Movement Re-Educator who specialized in brain-based movement and performance, I find it difficult to listen to misinformation about the nervous system and brain function.

It was refreshing to hear two presenters encourage forced exhalation.  The reasonings were different but the message is the same:  BREATHE OUT THROUGH THE MOUTH.  Strong.  And long.  Feel your lower stomach contract as you reach the end of the exhalation phase.

The Neuro-Revolution is here.  Brain-based training is the future of fitness.  I guarantee it.  Don't wait for mainstream trainers to get the message; find a Z-Health Practitioner and get started today!

Everything beings in the brain; all thoughts and movement.    Learn how to train your brain for better performance in daily life.  HINT:  Crossword puzzles are not the way to a healthy brain.

First Brains and Balance Class of 2019 is the Best in My Career

I just completed my first four-week Brains and Balance Training session of 2019 and the post-testing scores showed the most improvement in the fifteen years I've been teaching fall prevention classes!

I am so proud of the eleven adults who came to the classes at the Fair Oaks United Methodist Church and put in the work to improve lower body strength, lower body flexibility and dynamic balance to reduce risk of falling.  In other words, they got stronger, more flexible, and better balance for quicker reaction speeds.

Brain-based training is a new approach to an old problem; loss of balance and falls.  This diverse group of older adults were willing to try sensory activation and muscle training and the results were amazing.  Their ages ranged from 59 to 82 and one used a walker for mobility while another walks four miles daily.

After eight sessions in four weeks, four people improved lower body strength by 5.  In other words, four people were able to stand up and sit down five more times in 30 seconds.   That's an amazing improvement in such a short time that translates into reduced risk of falling.

The most improved participant was a 66 year old frequent faller.  On the first day, she couldn't touch her toes; her hand was nearly 7 inches from her feet.  On the last day, this amazing woman reached 6 inches past her toes in the same test!  She gained over 11 and a half inches in lower body flexibility.  That is a new record for ANY STUDENT in my fifteen year career.  Congratulations!

Two other students improved their lower body flexibility over three inches.  Lower body flexibility is necessary for a safe and stable walking gait and tight hamstrings are directly related to low back pain.  No more back pain!!!

The third senior fitness test measures dynamic balance and agility.  This is a life skill needed for safe movement through life so you can react timely to life's imbalances.   The youngest student of the group increased her timed Up and Go test by seven full seconds!  The oldest student of the class improved her time and walked stronger and more steady without using an assistive device.

These  pre-and post Senior Fitness Test  numbers show objective, measurable data.  This data is invaluable to students who put in the work and do not realize how much they've improved.  What isn't measured is the improvements in posture, vision, reaction times and confidence.

Balance is difficult to measure.  These numbers don't lie.  How you feel is proof.  Get enrolled in a Brains and Balance Class or enroll your loved ones.  Invest in your future.

Your brain: Use it or Lose it

A participant in my Brains and Balance Training class at The Club at WestPark in Del Webb asked a valid, common question...."Why do I need to do this vision training"?

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM'S USE IT OR LOSE IT:
TRANS-NEURONAL DEGENERATION
The answer is simple: USE IT OR LOSE IT.

We already know that if you don't move a body part, you lose the ability to move it.

You know if you don't strengthening your legs, your legs get weak and you're more likely to fall.

The same "USE IT OR LOSE IT" principle applies to your brain and nervous system called "TRANS-NEURONAL DEGENERATION"

A healthy brain needs fuel and activation.  If you don't activate the entire brain, neurons die.

Activating your senses is the only way to "use" your entire brain.  Not playing crossword puzzles and brain teasers.  You need to stimulate your senses.

Vision is the #1 input to the brain and vision is a brain-wide event.  In other words, when you do vision training, you activate all the lobes of the brain in order to see and process what you see.

The cool thing about sensory training is the neurology rule, "Neurons that lie together, fire together".  This means that as neurons die because of lack of fuel and/or activation, the dying neurons influence the ones next to it.  The good news is this lie together/fire together principle works the other way, too.

As you activate neurons through sensory input, the neurons positively influence the neurons next to it.     "Hey, I'm moving, move with me", said the vision neuron to the pain inhibitor neuron.  IN other words, when you activate the visual neurons, they activate neurons that turn off pain!

If you're in chronic pain, get your eyes moving.

As for improving your balance, the eyes muscles are innervated by nerves that go directly into the brainstem; areas of the brainstem that affect posture and balance.  It's complicated but what you need to know is that training the eyes activates neurons that DIRECTLY influence upright posture and balance.

The moral of this blog:
"If you don't train the sensory systems, half of your brain is dying"~ Kelly Ward

If you want to move, stay balanced, prevent a fall, have great vision and live independently, you'll do drills to activate the most neglected and least understood part of the brain; your sensory cortex.

Registered Nurse Living with PTSD Overcomes Fears with Brain Training

Overcame broken back with brain-based training from The Brains and Balance Lady on Vimeo.

Everyone has different reasons why they choose to enroll in my brain-based balance training programs. Falling and fear of falling is a huge motivator for a lot of people because my four-week program gets RESULTS.

Neuroscience research proves that the brain will make structural changes to survive and what's awesome is that you don't have to be over 80 to get results from my class!  Your brain wants to survive and will change with proper training.

Here, a sixty-something retired US Air Force nurse shares her personal testimonial about how brain-based training has helped her overcome her fears of movement after breaking her back.   The greatest benefit for her has been learning how to conquer fears so she can do the things she most enjoys; exercise, jumping, and spending time with her grandkids.

You are not alone in your fears.  Join others just like you in one of my Brains and Balance Training sessions or I can come to you for private training sessions.  I'll meet you where you are now to get you where you want to be.

Brain-based training is the future of fitness.  Let me show you how to activate parts of your brain for better balance, better movement and better vision.    Or, if you're living in pain, I offer holistic training methods to help you manage pain.

Whatever your goals, I want to help you reach them

Your coach,
Kelly

92 year old loses 20 pounds and 6 inches with Brain-Based Training

I've been working with a 92-year old client for roughly six months.   He trains three times a week for one-hour.  As his trainer, I've seen progressive changes in his performance and every once in awhile, I'll look at him and notice the big changes like his posture.

When I met him, he was bent over with kyphosis and scoliosis, shuffling and easily winded.  Over the past few month, I've seen him stand taller, stand straight, pick up his feet and lengthen his walking gait, practice getting up and down from the floor, crawl on the floor and control his breathing.   He's an entirely different person now; stronger, more confident and his slight dementia is even less.

His family is thrilled with his progress.  His son wanted his father to lose weight.  I told him that as his father gained control over his body through brain training and built muscle with resistance training, weight loss would be a natural by-product.

Well, his son sent me his personal measurements that he'd been keeping of his father and I was so proud of his progress, I had to share this:

This man is NOT on any medications and I've convinced his family to feed him whole foods that feed his metabolism; orange juice with hydrolyzed collagen protein, ice cream with salt, steak, potatoes, fruits, eggs, dairy, chocolate milk.

And this man has lost 22 pounds.  Praise God.  Brain-based training is the future of fitness and it's never too late to start.  At 92 years of age, you can lose 22 pounds, 6 inches from your waist and get stronger every day!

Glory to God!

Train the Brain to Reduce Pain

Are you in so much pain that you feel like you can't go on?  Are you in so much pain that you want to crawl up into a ball and not move?  Is your comfort zone lying on your back with feet elevated?  Does the thought of going on like this another day bring you to tears?  Do you know that there's more to life than the pain you're going through?  Do you know you're too young to feel this way???

My new client answered yes to all of the above questions.  A botched back surgery left her with shooting pain beneath her shoulder blades; it hurt to raise her arms, it hurt to bend forward, it hurt to sit in a chair, it hurt to walk.  Everything hurt.

To top it off, she has emphysema so breathing even hurt.   When I got there her pain level was a 10 out of 10; actually a 15 out of 10 but you get my point.

I could see the pain on her face when I got to her home.  We sat at the kitchen table and I started with the 90-minute assessment.  During this time, I ask a lot of questions and test a lot of different things.  This is a great time to get to know each other and for me to learn what happened before what happened happened.  How did she get in so much pain.

Pain is an output from the brain.  Don't get me wrong; pain is pain and it hurts.  It's valid.  It's real.  But pain is a protective output from the brain to get you to stop doing what you're doing.   Your brain is overwhelmed and something needs to stop.  Pain is the quickest way to get you to stop doing something.

Pain is an output from the brain.  Train the brain to reduce pain.
However it's up to you to change and/or address what's causing the pain.  In my new client's case, her brain wasn't getting enough fuel and her eye muscles needed to be activated.  She also needed to start moving her nerves.  Her nervous system needed a major tune-up!!!  WHAT?

Once we did some breathing drills and vision training drills, there was a smile of relief.  When we did some nerve glides and got the nerves moving, there was a glimmer of hope in her eyes.  She told me that I was her last option; it was either work with me or get back surgery!  I embrace that challenge and left her with some drills to do for homework.

Before I left, I asked her to rate her pain on a scale from 1-10 again.  She smiled and said "5/10".  Yay!!!  My job was complete.

When I returned THE NEXT DAY to review the homework drills with her, a different woman answered the door!  The same client, but she wasn't in nearly as much pain.  She was smiling, she walked lighter and her entire demeanor was different.

When we sat down to go through the homework drills, she told me she was so excited last night that she couldn't sleep!  She felt different and knew this was going to work.  Now I was excited.  I love using brain-based fitness training to help people get out of pain, improve balance, see better and move better.

Once your brain gets the activation it needs, your entire mood will change.  Not in a voodoo/weird way but in the best way possible.  You realize there is hope at the end of tunnel.  There is more to life than living in pain.  You learn how to move your body so it doesn't hurt.  You learn how to breathe so your brain gets the oxygen it needs to function.

I am so excited about working with her and seeing her transform before my very eyes.  I'll take pictures so you can see the improvements along the way.

And hey, if you're like my client and want to get out of pain so you can start living the life you were meant to live, contact me.  Set up a consult.

Blood pressure control through brain exercise

You probably didn't know that your blood pressure is controlled by your brainstem and through precise brain training drills, you can manage your blood pressure without medication.

As a Z-health Practitioner, I am trained to activate areas of the brain for optimized function.  I think we all agree that blood pressure is required for optimal life function.

Brain Training is Holistic blood pressure control
Last week, I was working with a 90-year old client and her blood pressure measurements at the beginning of the session were:  122/84 on the left and 149/109 on the right.

First I want to educate everyone that if your doctor isn't taking your blood pressure on both sides, you need to fire him/her immediately.  As you can see by my clients numbers, there's a huge difference from the right and left side.  This is because there is a left and right side of the brainstem and control of blood pressure begins in the brainstem, specifically in the pons.

My client's numbers on her right side of her body were pretty alarming but having worked with her for over four weeks, I already know that her right cortex needs more activation.  Her blood pressure readings support my findings.

Because her numbers were so high, we spent the majority of the session activating her right cortex; specifically right vestibular activation, right-cortex activating vision drills, and left side voluntary movement drills.  We also practiced a lot of respiration training drills and cerebellum activation.

Her blood pressure readings at the end of sixty-minute training session were:  112/72 on the left and 102/66 on the right.

Let me repeat this in a way you can clearly see the effect of precise brain activation training on a 90-year old's blood pressure:
Before:  149/109
After:  102/66

Get off the drugs.  Begin a holistic exercise program that starts with organ that is responsible for all movement and thought; the brain.  Brain activation is not voodoo; it's scientifically proven.  It's functional neurology and it's the future of fitness.

If you've tried everything and nothing has worked, try brain training.  Try training the organ that determines the way you move through life.  My name is Kelly Ward and I am a certified Z-Health Practitioner and I re-educate the nervous system to transform the way people move.  It's never too late, you're never too old and you're never too broken.

Trigeminal Nerve Glide for the SAVE!

Today I was out in the field and my last in-home session was with Bob.   When I got there, Bob was on the phone and Bob was bothered about something.  His lovely wife walked me to the porch where we chatted while I setup for our session.

Five minutes later Bob came out swinging.  His jaw hurt, his head hurt, he had these pains and he didn't know if he could do anything.  He didn't do his homework, he didn't do anything.  He said he'd give this one more try.  He believed in what we were doing and was going to give this one more try.  He was upset.
Trigeminal Nerve for the SAVE!!!!

His right jaw was on fire and the pain spread down his neck.  He couldn't stand it.  The pain was constant.  Not shooting, constant.  The area he pointed to is innervated by Cranial Nerve five; the trigeminal nerve; his chewing muscles, behind the ear, upper neck and throat area.  All right side.

As he left the room to get his red glasses and Z-vibe, I prayed for an answer; a clear path based on the neuropractitioner skills of Z-Health Performance Systems Education.  Upon return, in addition to the noxious jaw pain, he complained about swelling in the lymph node area.  I decided to start with right lymphatic duct drainage after some eye drills.

Bob did some fantastic respiration drills to mobilize the lymphatic drainage process.  After a minute or so, I palpated the neck area and started cranial soft tissue mobilization drills.  Pressure checking revealed tight right side temporal, saggital and lambdoid suture areas.   After Bob did the tilting, nodding and gliding drills, his pain level dropped significantly.  He immediately noted greater mobility and ease of movement in the pained areas.

I sat down and asked about the pain level.  It was still there but only when he turned his head a certain way. He had to search for it but he could find it.  Barely.  That's when it hit me...THE TRIGEMINAL NERVE!!!    He needs to do the trigeminal nerve glide!

After following step by step instructions, a smile came over Bob's face.  The pain was gone. "So all I need to do when I start having jaw pain is this nerve glide?" he asked bewilderedly.

Yep.  I video taped him doing the drill and sent it to him at his new email address on his new iPad.
Despite his skeptical attitude,  Bob gets it!  This neuro-stuff is working.   And he's happy!

In Brain-Training, NO Protocol Fits All!

People want easy solutions.  A one stop shop; if I do this, then this will happen.   If you follow these three easy steps, you will be cured.  If you do this stretch every day, your hip pain will go away forever.  We like predictability.  We want answers.  That's humanity.

People want answers and people in the helping professions (personal trainers, nurses, doctors, therapists, specialists, experts) are quick to offer solutions.  That's what we do; we fix problems.  We are trained to fix the problem.  Follow this protocol and you will be healed.

Brains and Balance Training with Coach Kelly
Unfortunately, our brains don't work that way.   The brain determines your movement, your balance, your vision.  Your fears, your pain, your habits; it all begins in the brain.  Due to the fact that we've all lived different lives, chosen different paths and faced different obstacles, no two
brains are the same.

For that reason, what "works" for one person may not work for you.  A drill that makes you feel like a million bucks might not even phase your friend.  That's why brain training cannot be mass produced.  The methods to optimize movement and reduce pain for each person is different and as unique as the client.   The community of Z-health Performance Neuro-Professionals recognize that NO PROTOCOL FITS ALL.

Ninety-five percent (95%) of what we do is habitual.  Ninety-five percent.  Unfortunately that means we are cruising through life on auto-pilot; totally unengaged from the moment and the movements we make to get through the day.

In my Brains and Balance Training, I teach neural activation drills that positively impact movement and balance.  It's fun to watch people's reactions after doing a vision drill; some have amazing results others might not feel a difference.  That's because no two brains are the same.

Or one person may not have done it correctly; she might be thinking about dinner and not watching her finger.  Or she may have a weakened eye muscle from an accident twenty-seven years ago and is unable to move the eye in it's full range of motion.  Now that drill becomes a threat rather than a benefit and her movement may not improve.  It's absolutely amazing to apply functional neurology.

I'm science-oriented. I like facts.  I thrive on objective data.  I want data; not possibilities. As a trained Z-Health Neuro-Practitioner, I am trained in the application of neuro-anatomy. There are scientific explanations for every action and reaction however A+B doesn't always equal C.   Discovering the weak link and training for optimized performance is the beauty of what I do;
solving or better understanding the puzzle, the why behind the reaction.

I wish more than anyone that there was one "Improve Vision" or "Cure for Vertigo"  protocol that I could teach in my classes but there's not.  Each person has a history; a unique and valuable journey.   You've earned the body you have today; change is up to you.  It's possible to rewire your nervous system to be more efficient.

Regardless, know that your brain is plastic and can change with specific training.

Myth: I have vertigo so my balance won't ever get better

Vertigo is an inner ear disorder that is characterized by bouts of paralyzing dizziness, nausea, fatigue and of course, the anxiety and depression due to these unpredictability of life altering episodes.   Some vertigo is situational and disappears while other types of vertigo can last a lifetime.  Needless to say falls are a major concern for people who suffer from vertigo due to inner ear dysfunction.

Train Vestibular Input for Better Output with Coach Kelly
There are other types of inner ear disorders that have the same impact; dizziness, the loss of daily functional ability and falls.  My aunt Betty was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease had to quit line dancing; her favorite activity for forty years.

Although she was able to manage some of the symptoms with medication, her inner ear disorder affected all other areas of her life which negatively impacted her quality of life.

While inner ear disorders can be life altering, there are ways to train the vestibular system for better balance and reduction of the  many symptoms that accompany inner ear dysfunction.

Unfortunately when someone experiences dizziness or loss of balance due to head movement, they subconsciously begin to change body position and behavior to restrict head movement.  Smart brain, huh?  Two classic representations of a person living with inner ear disorder are: 1) Bobblehead or 2) Stiff walking.

Bobble head means the head moves all over the place when walking.   This is done subconsciously because one of the brain's reflexive pathways isn't working.  The other extreme is the stiff walker.  This is also done subconscious to prevent any natural movement of the head that occurs when walking because another reflexive pathway isn't working correctly.

Here's the best news:  you can retrain your vestibular system and begin to regain control of your life.  I train the vision, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems for better sensory input and less sensory mismatch.  The result is your brain feels "safe" and can better predict what's going on now and what to expect.

Your frontal lobe or human self can tell yourself exactly what's going on but the part of the brain responsible for movement and vestibular integration doesn't communicate like that; it needs consistent, strong inputs for better movement or as I like to say, "all cylinders firing".

Now that I'm a Z-Health neuro-performance coach and balance expert who specializes in vision, vestibular and proprioceptive inputs to the brain, I wish I could have helped my Aunt Betty manage her meniere's disease for better daily function and maybe even get back on the dance floor.  I couldn't help but I'm here to help you.

Can I cure you?  No.  That's up to you.  I give you the tools and you do the work.

I make NO PROMISES OR GUARANTEES but I can offer new brain-based training methods that have been shown to work.  If you've tried everything and nothing has worked, it's time to try something else.  I offer neuro-scientifically proven, holistic neural training to optimize daily performance.

Brains and Balance Vision Skill Training with Coach Kelly

Vision is a skill and like all skills, it will improve with practice.  Balance is a skill and like all skills, it will improve with practice.  Mental clarity is a skill and like all skills, it will improve with practice.

Are you seeing a pattern?  All skills will improve with consistent practice.  This is based on the exercise science "SAID" principle; the body undergoes Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands (SAID) when practicing or training to improve efficiency.

In other words, practice makes perfect.
Your body will get good at whatever you practice however you practice it.

If you practice bicep curls, your body will adapt to imposed demands (what it's being asked to do) and get stronger to lift the amount of weight with the least amount of effort.  Yay, bigger arm muscles.
If you practice walking with a limp, your body is going to get really good at walking with a limp.  If you sit scrunched over in your chair or on the couch watching TV or playing on your phone, your body will get really good at sitting in a scrunched over position.

Think about what you're asking your body to do each day.  You're unknowingly building skills through habit.  The tricky part of skill training is doing it correctly.  You have to know HOW to train a skill in order to get better at the skill.

That's where I come in; I am trained in the skills of vision, balance and movement for optimized physical performance.  Your performance can be as simple as getting up from a chair, functioning in your daily life or improving your walk through this life journey or as complex as increased precision in your golf game, increased cardiovascular endurance for biking or running or regaining control of your body after a stroke.

Whatever your challange or goal,
increased brain function
will catapult your game!

Vision is the number one input to the brain and your trainer MUST KNOW the goal of each vision drill, what warning signs to look for and most importantly, how to train your eyes for optimized performance.

Every brain is different and general training classes are a great place to start before the need for individualized attention becomes apparent.  The basics will get you started but in order to thrive and make substantial changes, it's important to individualize your program.

Stroke Survivor Support Group Guest Speaker

As a public speaker and health educator,  I've been active in Sacramento and Yolo county communities presenting my dynamic ABCs of Balance workshop and promoting two upcoming Brains and Balance classes; one at the Woodland Community and Senior Center and the other at the Fair Oaks United Methodist Church.

Stroke Survivor Support Group Presentation with Coach Kelly
I love educating people about the power of neuroplasticity and empowering individuals to take action if they want to change their circumstances.  As a Z-Health Neuro-Performance Coach and Brain Exercise Therapist, I am trained to activate areas of the brain that directly impact balance, movement, posture and pain levels.

Last week I finally met Tom Hoag; registered nurse and Stroke Survivor Support Group facilitator for Dignity Health's Neurological Institute.  I say finally because a student of recent Brains and Balance class also attends the Stroke Survivor Support Group in Woodland.  This student is one of the most improved and brain exercise has changed his life so much that he wanted me to speak at an upcoming support group meeting.

The stars aligned and I met Tom at the Woodland Senior Resource Fair.  After laughter and discussion, it's confirmed; I will be the guest speaker at Tom's two stroke survivor support group meetings in June:

  1. Mercy San Juan Carmichael:  Wednesday June 13th. 11-Noon.  6501 Coyle Avenue  Carmichael.
  2. Woodland Community & Senior Center:  Monday, June 18th.  1-2pm.  2001 East Street  Woodland.
These support groups are open to the public and free of charge.  If you have had a stroke and want to learn how to improve your current functionality, please join us.

I have been working with four stroke survivors on a private training basis and the results are amazing!  They have regained sight, movement, balance and feeling where they thought was impossible.  Precise training gets precise results.

I am so excited about meeting and educating these stroke survivor support groups about the regenerative power of the brain and that with precise training, they can get precise results.

I hope to see you in June.
