Nervous System Rule #2 for Better Balance and Prevention of Falls

The better the input, the better the output.

The nervous system has three functions; input, interpretation and output.  Balance is an output.  If you want better balance, it's only logical that you need to train the inputs.  You cannot jump straight to the end product without addressing the first two steps.

Dr. Rose of FallProof™ introduced me to three sensory inputs and how to train them for improved balance and mobility.  She offered basic vision, vestibular and proprioceptive approaches to reduce falls.  Dr. Cobb of Z-Health taught me how to train these three systems from the brain's perspective and the results are life changing.

The better the visual inputs the better one's balance.  The better the vestibular inputs, the better the one's balance.  The better the sensory receptor input, the better one's balance will be.  Unfortunately, traditional fall prevention programs only focus on outputs. 

If you want better balance, you have to train the vision, vestibular and proprioceptive inputs and the brain's interpretation of them.

Foot warning: if you can't feel it, your brain can’t move it!

Our feet have 33 joints and have the most proprioceptive nerve endings than most other joints.  What this means to you is that your feet need to move.  Your brain needs to be able to move your feet and feel the different kinds of sensory inputs feet are capable of providing.

Ultimately, we live our entire life in shoes.

Rarely do people go barefoot and the result is your feet can't "feel" the different kinds of sensory sensations they were made for.  As a result, your feet lose the ability to feel sensation.  Numb feet can't feel the  surface you're walking on.

As a brain practitioner or heck, as a movement professional, let me tell you that if you can't feel it, it's hard for your brain to move it.  As a result, your brain can't move your feet very well.

People who have diabetes commonly develop peripheral neuropathy, or the inability to feel the ground and other sensations on the feet.  This permanent nerve damage is exasperated by lack of movement.  The less you move a body part, the less familiar your brain becomes with that body part. 

This is because your brain has "maps" of the body.  The more clear the map, the better the movement.  Poor mapping results in poor movement.  If you want to be stable in life and prevent a fall,  it helps to feel your feet and the surfaces underneath them.

Feet are so important for balance and prevention of falls that I spend an extraordinary amount of time re-introducing people to their feet!  We do foot and ankle mobility drills in my Brains and Balance Training classes so people can 'retrain their brain' how to move their feet again.  

Here's a great foot and toe mobility drill I learned from Dr. Cobb of Z-Health Performance Solutions.  Here's the deal when doing these brain based exercises, you have permission to be really bad when you first try these.  Your feet have been in "foot coffins" your entire life.  You haven't been asked to do this type of foot movement in ......FOREVER...... so it's only natural that this can be difficult.

In fact, don't be surprised if you can 't do them.  Your brain hasn't had to move your feet in this way in a long time, if ever, so don't get frustrated.  Keep practicing and you will get better!

The science of neuroplasticity proves that your body will re-wire and change for survival.  Feeling your feet in contact with ground, and being able to move them, is part of survival.   Have fun.

Nervous System 101 meets Fall Prevention

Here's an exerpt from new book, ABCs of Balance; Aging, The Brain and Coordination 

The nervous system does three things:
1.  Receive sensory input messages
2.  Interpret those messages and decide what to do
3.  Send a motor output

This continuous flow of communication is how we move through life.  The quality of the input messages directly affects the quality of the motor output.  A motor output is anything muscle-related.  Muscles get their information from nerves.  Neural impulses and hormonal responses are motor outputs.

Simply put, the better the input, the better the output.  Having your brain make decisions regularly improves the efficiency of the system.  These three steps must happen quicker than one-quarter of a second or you will fall down.

An efficiently running nervous system is the goal if you want to live life to the fullest while having a minimal risk of a falling down.  Heck, I want an efficient nervous system so I can move better through life, so my brain can function at it's highest potential and so I can feel and be the best me possible no matter what age I am.

As a Z-Health Neuro-Practitioner and Nervous System Specialist, I believe maximized brain function requires active training of the brain structures; not passively thinking about life and envisioning the best me possible.  Your thoughts definitely influence brain patterns but I want to activate the entire nervous system and it's three functions.

Logically thinking, to improve nervous system communication I would think increase speed of the three functions of the nervous system; increased input message transmission speed, increased brain interpretation and decision making speeds and increased motor output speed.

To prevent a fall, training for speed only makes sense because the quicker the response, the less likely you are to lose your balance.

In order to increase reaction speeds, you need to know how to train the three components of the nervous system.  Personal trainers, strength coaches, yoga instructors and group fitness instructors teach motor output training techniques and classes.  ZHealth Brain Practitioners train the sensory inputs and the brain's interpretation and decision making skills in addition to motor outputs.

Motor output is only one part of the nervous system.  While it's important to maintain the muscles, tendons and ligaments,  if you want to reach your maximum potential, it's time to train the entire nervous system; not just one component.  It's time to start training the inputs!

Get Stronger, More Flexible Legs in Four Weeks!

I just finished my first four-week brain-based balance training session of 2020 at the Andy Morin Sports Complex in Folsom, CA.   A class of eight older adults were eager to train the two things they don't want to lose; their brains and their balance and the most consistent improvements were stronger, more flexible legs.

The pre/post senior fitness tests showed remarkable improvements; life changing results.  Recall that I use the only standardized senior fitness tests to measure lower body strength, lower body flexibility and dynamic balance and agility on the first and last day of class.  

Legs are your fall prevention muscles; strong legs keep you upright and independent.  Having flexibility in lower body helps you walk safer by picking up your feet without tripping and increased lower body flexibility is directly related to reduced low back pain.

The most improved student was a 70- year old woman.  She increased lower body strength by (9) NINE chair stands, in 30 seconds!  She reached 3.5 inches further when reaching toward her toes and walked one and half seconds faster in the 8' Up and Go test.

Amazing.  These are life changing improvements.  She has stronger, more flexible legs and moves quicker on her feet.  This woman had vision problems that were trained over the four weeks and she now has skills to continue training her vision at home.

Perhaps the greatest improvement was an 82-year old woman who could not stand up without using
her hands on the first day.  On the last day, she did NINE (9) chair stands without using her hands.  This is a huge improvement when it comes to safety, and dignity!  She also improved lower body flexibility by (3) three full inches.  This is huge when it comes to low back pain and fall risk.

One participant who has more physical aliments than others improved her dynamic balance and agility (how quickly she got up and walked around a cone) by (4) FOUR full seconds.  Walking quicker with a steadier gait is a huge improvement that can save a person's life.  This woman has vestibular issues that require one-on-one training but we were able to find several high payoff drills that significantly improved her balance.  Instantly.

I have to note that this is small group training and individual needs cannot be addressed in a class setting.  Due to the nature of brain-training, individualized assessment and testing is required and strongly recommended.   I offer private sessions at a substantially reduced rate to all class participants.

The final significant improvement I'd like to mention is a 77-year old woman who increased lower body strength by (3) three chair stands and lower body flexibility by (3) three inches.  Again, stronger more flexible legs significantly reduce fall risk.

RockTape and Balance

I just attended a two-day seminar on taping of the body.  Rock Tape is a "movement company that dabbles in tape" and the art of taping is no longer reserved for professional athletes, we can all benefit from taping.  In fact, I learned some great techniques for relieving pain and fluid buildup, correcting posture, working with scars and improving range of motion; all of which my clients can benefit.

RockTape has partnered with Dr. Eric Cobb, the creator of Z-Health Performance, and as a studying Z-Health Master Practitioner, I was interested in learning more about the taping.  The course instructor was a doctor of Physical Therapy, Dr. Aaron Crouch.   The neat thing?  Aaron had been a student volunteer of mine during a fall prevention screening event in 2012!  Small world, now he's teaching me about RockTape!  He is a partner at Kime Performance Physical Therapy Training.

As a Brain Practitioner or one who trains the three sensory inputs the brain for better movement, I can say that RockTape only deals with one sensory system; the proprioceptive system.  It's refreshing to see a major company (RockTape) recognize the power of sensory input to the brain; the skin, joint and muscle receptors in this case.

Taping a body part improves the brain's mapping of that particular body part.  When injured, nerve damage can occur and receptor input of that area decreases.  As a result, movement suffers.  Taping increases sensory input from that area and immediately improves movement.  As always, you have to assess and re-assess to see the result.

It was cool to learn about scars and posture from a physical therapist perspective.  I've learned how to work with scars, posture, fluid buildup and pain from the brain's perspective so I enjoyed practicing how to tape clients after acute injury or specific to movement patterns.

I urged Aaron to attend Z-Health certification.   He will truly be blown away by the power of vision and vestibular systems which are two higher ranking sensory inputs in the brain's heirarchy for correcting movement.  Until then, RockTape is a great way to help people move better through improved body mapping to the brain.

Exercise Etc Older Adult Workshop vs. Brain-Based Training

I have been a fan of Exercise Etc workshops for years.  Guy Andrews and his team do an amazing job educating trainers how to work with the older adult population.  I have learned valuable functional exercises for baby boomers and their parents.  They do a great job teaching simple exercises for the aging spine, hip, and shoulders.

If you don't know me, I've been studying the brain and how the brain works at the doctorate level for the past two years.  When you study the brain, your perspective of everything changes.  Things that present as problems in the body, begin in the brain.

I went to a local Exercise Etc workshop this weekend hoping to learn something new and to see how the standard senior fitness programming fits into the brain scheme of things.  

The instructor, Mike Diebler, is a great guy and extremely knowledgeable about movement.  He did acknowledge several things about the nervous system (aka, the brain) that I thought were interesting.  

  • We agreed about the importance of identifying the cause of the movement problem.  In Z-Health, we are taught to take an extensively thorough health history.   The cause of every movement problem lies somewhere in the nervous system.  In Z-Health, we have an 8-Levels model of assessment to systematically identify the source of the problem.
  • We agreed that no matter how much you try to 'workout' a problem or weakness on one-side, it will always exist.  In Z-Health, we are taught about the brain and that there are two sides.  After years of lifestyle habits, one side of the brain usually needs more activation.  In Z-Health, we systematically identify the dysfunctional side and activate it.  A person has to earn the right to train bilaterally
  • We agreed about the importance of deep inhales and long, strong exhales.  The diaphragm is your breathing muscle and like any other muscle in the body, it needs to be worked in it's full range of motion.  We humans are shallow breathers and do not fully exercise our diaphragm.  The reprecussions are bent forward postures.  We need to stretch the diaphragm.
I left after the morning sessions.  It was good to go there but I didn't learn anything new.  Please do not get me wrong; I by no means, think I know it all. I do not.  I mean that the fitness industry as a whole isn't teaching anything new.  


There are only so many ways you can move your body.  The only way to change the way you move is to activate the brain.  You can stretch and strengthen your "posture" muscles all day everyday but if your brainstem isn't getting the balance of extension and flexion activation, your posture will never improve.

If however, you activate the brainstem, your posture will improve immediately.   It's brain-based. It's science.  It's neurology.

How Posture Training Can Directly Improve Your Balance

I meet a lot of people who are concerned about their posture  What's fascinating is "Posture is a primitive reflex"; the primary primitive reflex needed to move through life.  Without a stable posture, we cannot move safely through life and movement suffers.

When it comes to balance, posture is directly involved.  If you're bent over looking at the floor, stooped down closer to the floor, constantly staring at the floor, you're going to end up on the floor.

There's hope!  Postural weakness can be changed, at any age.  Once a qualified trainer addresses visual problems, muscle deficiencies and inner ear dysfunction, posture will change.  Knowing where to look and how to carry yourself is the fist step to better balance.

ALERT**** Neuroscience proves that it's never too late to improve your posture and the way you move through life.  Your brain is hard-wired for survival and once your brain 'feels' safe, your posture, balance and movement will improve****

 Z-Health Practitioners are trained to identify the body systems rendered dysfunctional and activate them to be functional.   Training the vision, vestibular and proprioceptive systems has immediate results but it's up to you to do the drills to make the changes permanent.

Don't Think You Need Brain-based Balance Training?

I just finished a 4-week session of Brains and Balance Fall Prevention Training in the gated community of Springfield at Whitney Oaks in Rocklin, CA and there were some amazing improvements in this group, especially from the students who didn't think they needed "balance training".  

The biggest single improvement was a 79-year old woman who reached 10 inches further while touching her toes.  TEN INCHES.  On the first day, she was 3.5 inches from touching her toes.  In four short weeks, she reached 6.5 inches past her toes!  She also did 3 more chair stands in 30 seconds.

What is awesome about this lady is she scored well on the fitness tests and wasn't going to join  because, "it was her husband who needed the class, not me!"  Well apparently her brain needed the class and her body responded!  She was a great student and truly practiced her homework and her post-testing showed it!

The most improved overall of the class was a 75 year old woman who accidentally joined the group.  Looking for the High Intensity Aerobics class, she stayed when I showed her how to fix the nagging nerve pain in her shoulder.    There are no coincidences.

A stroke survivor, this woman increased her lower body strength by 6 stand ups in 30 seconds,  increased her lower body flexibility by 4.5 inches and got up and walked around a cone 2 full seconds faster.  All in four weeks.  And to think she wasn't looking for balance training but ended up most improved in the class!  No coincidences.

The men in the class did equally as well.

This private, aging community gets the importance of staying active in order to be able to do the things you want to do when you want to do them.   Unfortunately, most people think that lifting weights, doing yoga and burning calories in a high intensity aerobics class is the key to independence.

Here's my message to aging adults:  Everything you do begins in the brain.   Your balance, strength, flexibility, power, and agility all begin in the brain.  If you want to participate in gym activities and stay active, you might want to try training the sensory systems that your brain relies on in order to move through life.

The better the input, the better the output.  Period.

I am so grateful for the open-mindedness of the eight individuals who invested in my four-week brain-based fall prevention training classes.

Jammed Joints Create Weak Muscles

"Jammed joints create weak muscles and open joints create strength"~ Dr. Eric Cobb of Z-Health Performance.  This is the greatest thing I've heard in awhile.   Otherwise known as the "Arthrokinetic Response",  it's magical when you see the instant results in balance, strength and stability after "creating space" in a jammed joint.

What body parts have a high probability of getting jammed?  Yep, you guessed it:  Ankles and wrists. Toes and fingers.  Lots of joints => increase risk of jammed.

Your feet spend most of a lifetime jammed into shoes; shoes that probably don't fit correctly but hey, at least they look good!  How many women painfully jammed their feet into high heels to wear to the office?  Years and years of this unnatural demand takes a toll.    Your ankles have to bear the tremendous forces of walking and running plus any additional body weight you might be carrying.

The foot has over 26 bones and 33 articulations, each with six degrees of freedom.   Lots of tiny bones with billions of sensory receptors and neurons necessary for stable walking gait.  Moving the feet stimulates nerve endings and releases feel good juices.

Strategically moving the feet improves the brain's map of the area.  Because there are billions of nerve endings, the foot and ankle take up a lot brain real-estate.  In other words, a lot of space in the brain is dedicated to feeling and moving those parts.   One rule of neurology is the better the map, the better the movement.  Or balance.  Or strength.

It's so encouraging to hear more and more professionals talking about the benefits of barefoot training and practicing with the feet in contact with the bare surface.  Being barefoot activates sensory receptors and strengthens intrinsic foot muscles which immediately improves reflexive stability and reaction times.

You want strong legs in order to remain balanced.  Strong legs start with strong feet and ankles.  Neurons need to fire quickly between sensory receptors of the foot to the brain to the cerebellum and back.  Quickly.

Open  joints with lots of movement create strong muscle connections.  Stability.  It's called the arthrokinetic response.

Start with these lateral ankle tilts to open up the joints of the ankle and foot.

Your Brain's Movement Maps

Your brain controls how much each joint moves.  Our joints have receptors in them that tell the brain about things like location, pressure, and temperature.  This joint-receptor input forms a three-dimensional map of the body.

This 3-D map is located in the brain and this is known as the third sensory system called proprioception.  This spatial awareness is how your brain knows where your body is in space at all times.  The better your brain's map of the body, the better your movement.

Conversely, if you don't move a body part, the brain's map for that area is "blurry".  If you were injured and didn't rehabilitate 100 percent (which is defined as the ability to move a joint in all ranges of motions at all speeds), then your brain's map of that injured area is blurry.

As a result, when your brain has to move the previously injured area, movement might be choppy, ratchety, spastic, or rushed.  These types of movement indicate poor mapping, an indication that your brain doesn't know how to move an area.

The better the brain's map of the body, the more smooth and efficient the movement.  Think about a highway.   You can go fast on well-traveled roads.  Similarly, when you repeatedly practice a movement, your body (and brain) get really good at that movement.  

Practice makes perfect but you need to practice perfect.  That's because your body gets good at whatever it does, exactly how it does it.  This is known as the SAID principle or specific adaptations to imposed demands.  You get good at whatever you do, exactly how you do it.

For that reason, you want to practice all movements in good form or your body will get good at bad movement.   Your brain's mapping of the body is dependent on many other neurological factors but for this blog, just know that all movement is planned and controlled by your brain and your brain depends on receptor input to know where the body is in space.  

Take-aways:

  • Your brain can forget how to move a body part if you don't move it.   
  • Practice moving each joint in all directions at all speeds.  
  • The better the brain's map of the body, the better your movement

Your brain: Use it or Lose it

A participant in my Brains and Balance Training class at The Club at WestPark in Del Webb asked a valid, common question...."Why do I need to do this vision training"?  

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM'S USE IT OR LOSE IT:
TRANS-NEURONAL DEGENERATION
The answer is simple: USE IT OR LOSE IT.  

We already know that if you don't move a body part, you lose the ability to move it. 

You know if you don't strengthening your legs, your legs get weak and you're more likely to fall. 

The same "USE IT OR LOSE IT" principle applies to your brain and nervous system called "TRANS-NEURONAL DEGENERATION"

A healthy brain needs fuel and activation.  If you don't activate the entire brain, neurons die.   

Activating your senses is the only way to "use" your entire brain.  Not playing crossword puzzles and brain teasers.  You need to stimulate your senses.
 
Vision is the #1 input to the brain and vision is a brain-wide event.  In other words, when you do vision training, you activate all the lobes of the brain in order to see and process what you see.  

The cool thing about sensory training is the neurology rule, "Neurons that lie together, fire together".  This means that as neurons die because of lack of fuel and/or activation, the dying neurons influence the ones next to it.  The good news is this lie together/fire together principle works the other way, too.

As you activate neurons through sensory input, the neurons positively influence the neurons next to it.     "Hey, I'm moving, move with me", said the vision neuron to the pain inhibitor neuron.  IN other words, when you activate the visual neurons, they activate neurons that turn off pain!

If you're in chronic pain, get your eyes moving.  

As for improving your balance, the eyes muscles are innervated by nerves that go directly into the brainstem; areas of the brainstem that affect posture and balance.  It's complicated but what you need to know is that training the eyes activates neurons that DIRECTLY influence upright posture and balance.

If you want to move, stay balanced, prevent a fall, have great vision and live independently, you'll do drills to activate the most neglected and least understood part of the brain; your sensory cortex.

You mean all I have to do to move better is stare at my finger?

I'm teaching my third "Brains and Balance Training with Coach Kelly" session at The Retreat in a Del Webb community.  As with all my classes, I love getting to know the participants, their struggles, their strengths and mostly watching their balance improve.

In this class, I'm blessed to have an older couple in their early 90s.  My youngest participant is 66.  That's quite an age span as well as a difference in ability levels but that's the challenge facing older adult fitness instructors like myself.  Having different ability levels in one class is definitely a challenge but this is a manageable class size and overall, everyone is near the same ability.

Brain-based training is definitely trending right now; anything "neural" is a hot item due to the science of neuroplasticity.  Neuroplasticity proves that the brain can change and adapt to become more efficient.  The question is HOW do I train the brain's neuroplasticity?    As an Exercise Therapist and Brain Practitioner, I use proven methods to 'reduce threat' to the brain for improved performance.

After two weeks of brain-based training, the entire class is doing amazing, especially the older couple.  I love when people come to my presentations and are 'dis-believers"or 'naysayers'.  I love it because change happens at the speed of the nervous system (immediate) so when I have them do a vision drill and then reassess, they cannot believe the difference!

The other day in class,  Bob, my 91-year old participant, said rather loudly, you mean to tell me that all I have to do to move better is stare at my finger?  We all laughed and said, yep!  The power of  visual input is beyond amazing.  My tag line, "it's not magic, it's neuroscience" is true.  It's absolutely amazing to see how the body responds after a 'high payoff' drill.

Another gentleman, age 66, chimed in, "I was a total disbeliever until we did the pencil push-ups; now I believe what you're teaching".  Another gentleman, age 83, said, "I consider myself logical, even linear in thought but I do not understand how this is happening so I"m just going to trust you Kelly" and then he smiled.

That's golden to me!  Trust me friends, this is good.  This is real good.  I've pretty much dedicated my entire life to improving balance and reducing falls among older adults because there is hope; movement is life.  As an evolving neuro-practitioner, I am even more passionate about sharing the techniques I've learned about the brain and improving movement, balance and vision while reducing pain.

I'm not going to change who you are.  Brain training doesn't make you a different person but it does help you gain control over your body and mind which only helps you live better longer!

Brains and Balance Z-Training with Coach Kelly


Brains and balance; the two things you don't want to lose as you age.  Neuroscience proves the plasticity, or changeability of the brain.  Science and research demonstrate that staying active is the best way to remain independent.  I want to take this a step further and state that when properly activated, the brain can change how you move, how you see, and how stable you are on a daily basis.

In order to function, the brain needs two things: fuel and activation. There are two types of fuel that your brain requires: glucose and oxygen.  Everything you eat breaks down to glucose.  There's no good or bad glucose, at the cellular level, it's just glucose.  Your brain consumes 70% of your daily caloric intake. Think about that.  What type of food are you feeding your brain???

Oxygen.  Just breathe.  On average, a person takes 22,000 breaths each day.  That wouldn't be a problem if we knew HOW to breathe correctly.  Unfortunately, Americans are a bunch of shallow breathers.  On average, we use less than one-quarter of our lung capacity.  Instead, we breathe in, maybe feel a rise in our chest and exhale.  This breathing pattern is not only bad for your neck, shoulders and back musculature but also horrible for your brain.    How do you breathe???
