Sacramento fall prevention classes in the spring!

Spring forward, fall backward.  If it was up to me, there wouldn't be ANY falls (especially backward) but as the "Fall Lady", I hear jokes about the season of fall often.  Since we turned clocks forward today, I would like to announce my upcoming balance training classes in the Sacramento region.

When I refer to my "classes", I am talking about the FallProof™ balance training sessions that progressively challenge the body's balance systems.  Classes meet for one-hour, twice a week, for four weeks; a total of eight classes.   Class size is limited to no fewer than 6 and no more than 14 participants.

I conduct pre- and post-assessment fitness data on each person so I allow two hours for the first class so everyone can complete paperwork and get tested.    There is a fee that is not covered by insurance yet so contact me if you are interested in this physical-therapy based balance training program.

As of now, I have two balance training sessions scheduled for April in the Sacramento region.

Balance training classes:
1.  Presentation of the Virgin Mary Church (4123 Robertson Ave, Sacramento, 95821)
     12:30p-1:30p, Monday and Friday
     March 31-April 28, 2014
     THIS TRAINING CLASS IS FULL

2.  Fremont Presbyterian Church (8770 Carlson Dr  Sacramento, 95819).  Across from Sac State.
      9:00-10:15 am, Monday & Friday
      April 7-May 2, 2014
      Call to register:   916-452-7132

I will keep you posted as new class locations are determined.
Hope to see you in class.

Spring forward!

Balance Training at Oak Avenue Free Methodist

I taught my first FallProof™ balance and mobility training session at the Oak Avenue Free Methodist Church in Orangevale, CA and I have to say this was one of the most enjoyable groups that I have ever taught!  The joy of Lord filled the room each and every class and the group did great.

We started with 8 participants; 6 women and 2 men.  One woman withdrew due to health issues and one of the men attended infrequently but gave it his all when he was there.  Everyone showed improvement in at least one of the fitness parameters associated with fall risk.

In fact, the most improved participant in class was a 74 year old gentleman. He increased his lower body strength by 15%, his dynamic balance and agility improved 45% and his lower body flexibility improved 19%.  In everyday life, he was able to do 2 more chair stands in 30 seconds, get up and walk around a cone 1.9 seconds faster and was able to reach 5.7 inches closer to his toes!  Yes, he improved his lower body flexibility by nearly 6 inches in only four weeks!!!!

I have to say that one lady beat the lower body flexibility improvement.  On the first day of testing, one 70-year old woman was 7.5 inches from her toes!  Her hamstrings were so tight, it severely affected her walking gait and increased her chance of falling.  After 4 weeks of homework and dedication, she was able to reach ONE INCH past her toes on the final testing day!  WOO-HOOO!

Praise the Lord~!
This group showed dedication and determination to reduce the risk of a fall while improving balance and stability.  And they did a wonderful job of it!  It's never too late to improve your balance and with hard work and determination, you too can touch your toes one day!

Stand up without help!

I'm teaching my final session of FallProof™ balance and mobility training classes at Parkside Community Church and I have an amazing group of women.  These ladies are working hard to improve their balance and reduce the risk of a fall.

We are in the third week of class and this is when people start recognizing the benefits of the progressively challenging program that I teach.  One very special woman is living with Pompe, a disease of the skeletal muscles and she is taking my class to maintain strength and improve her balance.

She came to class yesterday and was beaming with excitement.  She shared that she and her husband spent a wonderful weekend at a nearby resort and she had a "breakthrough".  She said there was a circumstance when she normally wouldn't have been able to get up without the assistance of her husband but thanks to her training and doing her prescribed "homeplay", she got up without his help!

I want my readers to know that no matter what your situation is, it's never too late to improve!  Your body can and will adapt to new demands.  You can get stronger and by practicing chair stands everyday, you too can get up without help.

Stick with it.   The exercises I prescribe for homeplay are featured in my book, The Complete Guide to Fall Prevention.  Order your copy today and start a program to help you gain your independence.

Visual training kind of day...

As the Fall Prevention Lady, I promote multi-sensory training in order to reduce the risk of an accidental fall. The sensory systems involved in balance are the visual, vestibular and somatosensory systems. Each system contributes vital input about the body, the environment and one's balance. Thus, training each of these systems is necessary to reduce the risk of a fall.

I am teaching the multisensory balance and mobility training program, FallProof™, in the communities of Sacramento. Today I have three classes, all at different levels in the program, and it so happens that each class program focuses on Visual training! For me, it's a visual training kind of day. I am so thankful to be improving the quality of life for class participants, especially those who practice the program at home.

Hottest trend in fall prevention exercise classes hits Sacramento

As the Fall Prevention Lady, I teach balance and mobility training classes in the Sacramento region. These fall prevention exercise classes meet twice a week for 4-weeks and enrollment is closed after the second class. These beginner level classes are perfect for older adults who have not exercised in years, who have been released from physical therapy but are not ready for community-based 'senior fitness' classes, anyone who has fallen or is concerned about falling.

I have been teaching summer sessions at Parkside Community Church, Clarksburg Community Church, Fremont Presbyterian Church and St. John's Retirement Village. I started at Parkside with a beginner level and now offer intermediate and advanced levels for those who have completed the first level of balance training. These training sessions are progressively challenging and build on skills taught in the first few classes which is why a person cannot join after the first week.

I have just added two new class locations to my September schedule. I will be teaching at the Senior Connection in Fair Oaks and the Carmichael Presbyterian Church. I also added two classes to the October schedule; I will be teaching classes at the Asian Community Center and the Swanston Community Center. And guess what? I have plenty of time in my schedule for more classes!

If you live in the Sacramento region and are interested in hosting or attending a FallProof™ balance and mobility training session, contact me, the Fall Prevention Lady.

Balance and Mobility class in South Sacramento

I am offering a 4-week balance and mobility class that meets twice a week at Parkside Community Church in South Sacramento. This class is open to beginners. In other words, people who haven't exercised in years or those who were exercising but travel, an illness or a fall interrupted their routine are invited to join this class.

The first class was Monday and I was so excited to have 17 participants register and attend the first session! Although people come from different backgrounds and have different physical abilities, it was encouraging to discover that everyone has one thing in common; a concern about falling.

As a certified FallProof™ balance and mobility instructor, I am implementing the evidence-based training techniques that have successfully reduced fall risk and increased balance confidence for thousands of older adults. Each class will get progressively more difficult since the goal is to challenge yet not exceed one's abilities.

I am so excited older adults in the local area are taking responsibility for their well being and getting educated about how to reduce the risk of falling. My goal is to educate, demonstrate and facilitate the development of individualized exercise programs that adults will follow at home in order to reduce the risk of falling.

Take 5 to Exercise..... I encourage you to join the May session!

South Sacramento fall risk reduction class

Some of you may be aware that I recently graduated from Sac State with a Special Master of Science in Therapeutic Aging. Like most (post-bachelor) graduates, I am seeking full-time employment (aka, a career position) with a company, a career that offers full benefits and the room for growth. Excuse me but like most American citizens, I find the list of job opportunities that offer a competitive salary and full-time benefits to be discouraging to say the least.

As an independent contractor, I presented a proposal for a 4-week fall prevention exercise class to the committee members at Parkside Community church and the response was a UNANIMOUS YES! Located in South Sacramento, Parkside is very active church that offers classes to the entire community. Becky Anton, the parish nurse, is currently doing the "Walk to Jerusalem" health promotion program and the parishioners are doing great.

Lifestyle changes take time. I tell my clients that Rome wasn't built in a day so don't expect your body to change instantly. Afterall, those extra pounds didn't there overnight so don't expect them to disappear in one week. By sticking with a well-rounded balance and mobility program, your body will adapt to the demands. The key is to safely challenge yourself....consistently. I am just the person to show you how to do that!
